At Thirsk Community Primary School, inclusion is fundamental to our vision of creating an inspiring learning community where every pupil thrives, achieves their full potential, and shapes a brighter future. We honour diversity and ensure that all pupils, particularly those who are disadvantaged or have SEND, are welcomed, valued, and supported to succeed.
Our inclusive approach includes:
- Creating a Positive and Supportive Environment for All Pupils We actively remove barriers to learning and participation, promote positive relationships, and foster wellbeing for every pupil without exception. Behaviour is managed through a positive, proactive approach, ensuring a safe and calm learning environment.
- Building an Ongoing, Holistic Understanding of Pupils’ Needs We use a graduated ‘assess, plan, do, review’ approach to understand and respond to individual learning needs. Assessment is regular, purposeful, and collaborative, involving pupils, parents, carers, and specialists. Teachers are empowered to make informed decisions to tailor teaching effectively.
- Ensuring Access to High-Quality Inclusive Teaching and Targeted Interventions All pupils have access to ambitious, broad, and well-sequenced curricula designed to secure foundational knowledge. High-quality teaching is complemented by carefully selected small-group and one-to-one interventions, supported effectively by teaching assistants.
- Robust Identification and Support Systems Our systems for identifying pupils with SEND and those who are disadvantaged are thorough and prompt. We provide effective, timely support that enables pupils to make consistent personal and academic progress.
- Strong Leadership and Inclusive Culture. Inclusion is embedded in leadership and management, reflected in the school’s values and ethos. We foster an inclusive culture where pupils feel safe, accepted, and motivated to achieve.
- Attendance and Full-Time Education Commitment We maintain high attendance expectations and currently do not use part-time timetables or alternative provision. Any absence is rigorously monitored and managed to ensure pupils access full-time education.
- Engagement with Families and Community We actively involve parents, carers, professionals, and the wider community in supporting pupils’ learning, personal development, and well-being.
This comprehensive approach ensures that all pupils, especially those who are disadvantaged or have SEND, receive equitable opportunities to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, fully aligned with the latest Ofsted inspection framework and best practice guidance.
